Get to know the 19-year-old makeup artist behind your fav craft-store chic looks

August 1, 2018

Helen Marie a.k.a Honeydon.t is a 19-year-old Instagram makeup artist based out of Columbus, Ohio. Known best for her craft-store chic aesthetic and her mashup of bling with barely-there makeup, Helen’s looks have attracted thousands of Instagram followers. We got to know Helen including her role model, makeup must-haves and why you should never follow the rules.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

Natural face, with some jewels? Craft store sponsorship? I’m still figuring it out! I love texture so I use a lot of stuff that isn't makeup, cause as far as the actual makeup is concerned, it's fairly fresh/natural. My eye looks are usually a bit artsy and are just me trying to conceptualize something around my eye using whatever I find.

Where do you get your inspiration for your looks?

Literally anything. Fruits, beaded necklaces, tears, the sky or nothing at all. Just anything this world has to offer.

How did you first get into makeup?

I started wearing makeup in high school. Although my use of it was very toxic because I wore it because of my insecurities, I was pretty good at it. I always managed to be outside of the box with my everyday looks. Once I ended up joining the military (which was short-lived, eww), I began to become interested in "natural makeup" as far as skin and brows go and then just went with the flow from there.

What are your top 5 beauty products?

1. Glow Recipe - Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask
2. The Ordinary - AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution
3. L'Oreal Telescopic Mascara - Jet Black! (I promise it's better that the regular black one lolol)
4. Glossier - Boy Brow
5. Mac - Clear Lipglass

What's a cool beauty tip?

“My tip is to not follow the rules”

I'd say my tip is to not follow the rules - literally the rules that come on the package. Almost all products are multi-use. Lip stain IS blush. Eye pencil IS lip liner. Lip gloss IS highlighter. Not up for debate please don't @ me anyone. Also don't follow creative rules, not sure whose idea it was to put rules on creative processes.

Who are your role models and why?

My role model is my Momma, she's a Boss. She's defied all the stats and is the CEO of her own flourishing catering business, that has gotten huge over the past few years. She just continues to grow and expand her horizons all day everyday, and that's what I want to do creatively and in general.

What fashion or beauty items would you buy if money were no object?

I'd buy a crap ton of really huge embroidered/sequined African scarfs. A bunch of bedazzled sunglasses, and a couple handfuls of some @milliesavage_ rings. Also, a lifetime supply of Glossier's expensive ass lip gloss.

What's a show or film you watched recently and loved?

Sorry to Bother You! I absolutely loved this movie - shit was weird! 10/10 would recommend if you're someone who likes surprises.

Who should we check out on Instagram?

@willyverse, @wallflowermccoy and @urgalsal_

Where can we see more of your amazing looks?
